Homestead Farm Alpaca Stud - Canterbury, NZ
We are Russell and Carolyn Nelson. We have been full-time Alpaca farmers for over 10 years now, and have an extensive background in farming – having farmed over 2500 ewes and 150 cattle for many years on our previous farm in South Canterbury.
Our mission is to breed the densest finest alpaca fleeces possible – Alpaca royale. Alpaca-royale is like no other, it is superior to any other natural fibre in the world, and is used in the production of luxury garments. It is softer than Merino fleece and Cashmere, and can exhibit a wonderful and luxurious lustre.
By aiming to consistently breed the best alpaca fleece possible, we, along with other dedicated breeders in New Zealand, are helping to develop a sustainable alpaca fibre industry in this country. We introduced the rare 'Suri' breed of alpacas into New Zealand in 1998 for this purpose. We also breed 'Huacaya' alpacas – the most common breed.
For those wanting to enter the industry, we have a number of both Suri and Huacaya alpacas for sale and stud males of both breeds available as herd sires.
We are passionate about our alpacas. So much so, that we bought a property near State Highway One in Mid Canterbury as a showcase for the public to see them. The property has been developed to cater soley for Alpacas, and we even built our house so that we could see all of our farm – to keep a caring eye on our charges.
